Have you ever sat amidst your work shoulders tall in your afternoon, your words and your solace…

sculpture of toes made of gum wrappers, 2017.

Have you ever sat amidst your work
shoulders tall in your afternoon, your words and your solace
floating along like
bits of grit
on a stream of beautiful mundane movement

And then it’s gone
it’s knocked away
without a ripple
and you are
breathless
eyes wide
scared to look up
holding it in
like all your pieces are weeping over their different edges
and their jagged unmet ends
and you can’t make anything touch

Not even your fingers
to your aching chest
not your hands
to your stifled rest

So there you are, still sitting

As the stream slips by
but you aren’t in it or on it or anywhere near it

You are just sitting
out
and you don’t know why
